BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a larger protective protein complex originally isolated from human gastric juice. The 15-amino acid sequence (Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val) has no known sequence homology with other characterized peptides in the Protein BLAST database, making it structurally unique among gastric peptides.
BPC-157 is a linear peptide lacking disulfide bonds, freely soluble in water at physiological pH, and notably stable under conditions that degrade most peptides — including prolonged exposure to gastric acid. The compound is metabolized through standard peptide pathways, with the final metabolite being individual amino acids (primarily proline).
Research Applications
- Angiogenic signaling and VEGFR2-associated pathway investigation
- Nitric oxide (NO) system modulation and endothelial function studies
- FAK-paxillin and JAK-2 signaling cascade research
- Growth hormone receptor expression studies in fibroblast models
- EGR-1 (Early Growth Response gene 1) and ERK1/2 pathway activation
- Cytoprotective and mucosal integrity research in gastrointestinal cell lines
Published Research Context
BPC-157 has been referenced in over 150 published studies spanning multiple organ systems and model organisms since its first description by Sikiric et al. in the early 1990s at the University of Zagreb. Preclinical literature has documented investigations across vascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and neurological experimental models. The peptide has been shown to upregulate growth hormone receptor expression in tendon fibroblasts in a dose- and time-dependent manner, with downstream JAK-2 phosphorylation confirmed (Chang Gung University, 2018). Pharmacokinetic profiling (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022) confirmed standard peptide drug metabolism with no novel or toxic metabolites detected.
